Well, the results are in.

With an overwhelming majority of 78% voting yes, the CMESA has succeeded in our referendum question to increase the student levy fee from $6 to $16. With increased resources, we will be able to provide the CME student population more services and opportunities with which to enrich their university careers. How exciting! This is a significant milestone for the CMESA, and we suggest that you look forward to what’s to come from this organization in the future.

A big thank you goes out to all who were involved in this process. Whether it was with filming, editing, chalking, talking, advocating, advertising, advising, tweeting, class presenting or just representing, none of this could have been possible without your tireless efforts.

The CMESA has begun a campaign today promoting a vote that could change the course of Guelph Commerce students’ lives.

From March 23rd to the 29th, we will be asking CME students to support us with their vote to increase the fee levied to them from $6 to $16 per semester. The Dean’s office has extended a generous offer of support by agreeing to provide $4 per student if the vote passes, which would bring the total endowment up to $20 per student.

This is a historic event for the CMESA, as up to this point, we have received one of the lowest fees in the country – $6. To give you an idea of what students at business schools across the country pay to their college governments:

Business School

University

Levy

Ted Rogers School of Management

Ryerson University

$60

Sprott School of Business

Carleton University

$43

HEC

Université-de-Montréal

$67.35

John Molson School of Business

Concordia University

$56.40

School of Business and Economics

Wilfred Laurier University

$42

Sauder School of Business

University of British Columbia

$266.00 plus a building fee of $1,000 (awarded through a student referendum)

At each of these universities, the task of enhancing the academic careers of business students is made quite a bit easier with a budget that allows for a lot of room to grow.

If CME students were to pass this vote, here are some of the initiatives we would be more equipped to offer:

Hosting national conferences and competitions

Offering free tutoring

Providing job mentorship including resume and interview prep geared specifically towards applying to industry positions

Providing funding for student-run initiatives (charity, social and academic events)

Supporting students who attend conferences and competitions through funding and preparation

Providing more opportunities for students to connect with industry through expanding programs such as our Nestlé Waters Lunch and Learn program

Creating a passport partnership with the Guelph Chamber of Commerce to send CME students to GCC-hosted networking events

Increasing the levy passed on to our student groups (HTMSA, HRMSA, ASG, REHSA, Marketing Society and the EFA)

Offering support and funding to new student groups such as the Entrepreneurial Society and Net Impact Guelph

This list is only the beginning.

It’s up to you to make it happen by placing your ballot.

After a semester long of preparation and planning the CMESA in collaboration with the CME sent the very first Guelph half team delegation to JDCC, an annual business conference and competition http://jdccentral.ca/. This year the conference is hosted by Carleton University, and our Guelph crew captain by Alexis Butty and Chelsea Galoni took off bright and early this morning, Friday January 20th, 2012. We sent teams to compete in the following academic areas, Marketing, Finance, Accounting, and Human Resources. In addition we recruited a group of CME students to compete in the Social challenges, hyped up to be quite entertaining. We wish our team all the best this weekend and look forward to sending a full team delegation to next years conference.
